영화를 활용한 영시 수업 연구

  • 69

This study exemplifies an English poetry class using movies where well-known poems are recited. It also investigates how the learners perceive the interests and effects of learning English poetry and English expressions through the class. The subjects were 31 college students who participated in this class as a liberal arts elective course. The class was implemented for a total of 12 weeks, and used six movies including Interstellar (Nolan, 2014), Dead Poets Society (Weir, 1989), A River Runs Through It (Redford, 1992), A.I. (Spielberg, 2001), In Her Shoes (Hanson, 2014), and Sylvia (Jeffs, 2013). The results of the survey conducted after the lessons showed that the learners had a positive attitude toward the class in terms of interests and effects of using movies in an English poetry class. Meanwhile the results also showed that students wanted to learn more deeply and intensively with fewer movies instead of six movies, which was too much for them. Therefore, the results of this study imply that two or three movies could be appropriate for one semester. Overall, as a result of an analysis of the survey, it was found that using movies helps learners enjoy the poems more and allows them to attain a deeper understanding of them, so it appears to be an effective method for an English poetry class.
