Syncretic Characteristics of Schemenlaufen, the carnival of Imst, Austria

오스트리아의 유네스코 인류무형유산 Schemenlaufen(the carnival of Imst)에 나타난 문화적 혼종성

Schmenlaufen은 오스트리아 임스트(Imst)에서 4년마다 한번씩 사순절(Fasnacht)이 시작되기 전 일요일에 개최되고 있는 카니발이다. 지난 2012년 유네스코 인류무형유산에 등재된 Schemenlaufen의 주요 등장 인물은 Roller와 Scheller, Laggeroller와 Laggescheller(the parody on Roller and Scheller), Sackner(Bager), Spiritzer(Water Sprayer), Kübelemaje(the Powder Girl), Vogelhändler(Bird Trader), Bärenbande(Bear with his driver), Kaminer(the chimney sweepers), Hexen und Hexenmusik(the band of witches) 등 매우 다양하며, 이들 각 캐릭터는 풍요와 다산, 겨울에서 봄으로의 계절 변화, 공동체의 소통과 화합을 상징한다. 등장 인물의 가면, 코스튬, 퍼포먼스에는 기독교적, 자연종교적, 이교도적 요소가 혼재되어 있다. 본 논문에서는 Schemenlaufen의 준비 과정과 진행 순서, 가장행렬 등장인물들의 다양한 캐릭터에 나타나는 가면의 유형별 분석을 통해, 그 안에 내재되어 있는 문화적 혼종성을 규명하려 하였다.

Schmenlaufen is a carnival held every four years in Imst, Austria on the Sunday before Lent(Fasnacht) begins. This carnival was listed in 2012 as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The various major characters appearing in Schemenlaufen include Roller and Scheller, the parody on Roller and Scheller(Laggeroller and Laggescheller), Bager(Sackner), Water Sprayer(Spiritzer), the Powder Girl(Kübelemaje), Bird Trader(Vogelhändler), Bear with his driver(Bärenbande), the chimney sweepers(Kaminer), the band of witches(Hexen und Hexenmusik). These characters symbolize abundance and fecundity, the seasonal change from winter to spring, and communication and harmony among communities. These characters’ masks, costumes, and performances show a mixture of elements of Christianity, natural religions, and paganism. This paper analyzes the various types of masks worn by the diverse characters in the preparation and progress of Schemenlaufen as well as the costume parades to define their syncretic characteristics.
