Exhibition of History in Museums : Formation of Collective Identity and Problem of History Politics

독일에서는 1980년대에 두 개의 대규모 박물관건립 프로젝트가 정부 주도하에 추진되었다. 정부는 1945년 이후 동서독 역사를 주로 다루게 될 독일연방공화국(서독) 역사의 집(Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland)과 독일사 전체를 아우르는 독일역사박물관(Deutsches Historisches Museum) 건립을 위한 작업에 착수했다. 그러나 박물관건립 프로젝트는 얼마 안 있어 격렬한 논쟁을 야기했다. 논쟁은 크게 보아 역사 전시를 통한 민족국가의 정체성 확립이라는 당위성과, 박물관이 특정한 현실정치적 목적을 관철시키기 위해 역사정치적으로 악용될 수 있는 위험성을 지적하는 주장이 대립하는 형태로 진행되었다. 이 글에서는 두 박물관의 성격과 전시 방향을 둘러싸고 벌어진 당시의 논의를 살펴보면서 어떠한 쟁점들과 문제들이 제기되었는지를 들여다보고, 이를 필자의 관심과 관점에서 정리하고 평가해보고자 한다. 이와 함께 박물관의 역사전시를 둘러싼 이론적 논의를 아울러 살펴보고자 한다. 역사교과서와 박물관 전시는 역사와 대중을 매개한다는 점에서 공통점이 있지만 매체의 특성상 뚜렷하게 구분되기도 한다. 최근 들어 박물관은 다양한 형태의 유물 수집, 보존, 연구라는 전통적인 기능을 넘어서 상설 및 특별 전시, 각종 역사 및 문화 관련 행사, 박물관 학습, 디지털 정보제공 등으로 활동영역을 넓힘으로써 역사의 대중화 작업과 관련해 주목받고 있다.

In Germany, two major projects for building of museums in the 1980s was pushed under the lead of the government. The Haus der Geschichte Bundesrepublik Deutschlands(the House of History of the Federal Republic of Germany) will mainly deal with the history of East and West Germany since 1945, and the Deutsches Historisches Museum(the German Historical Museum) the entire German History. However, the museum project is soon confronted with a furious debate. In the debate there were two major issues: a controversy surrounding to establish of national collective identity through the history exhibition in museums and riskiness to abuse the exhibition for the purpose of real political interests. In this article it will be examined that the discussion surrounding establishment of the both museums and the direction of the exhibition were held. And we also took a look at any issues and problems are posed in the debate. I would like to try to summarize critically in my views. In addition, it turns to the theoretical discussion about the historical exhibition in museums. History textbooks and museum exhibitions are in common in the sense, that they connect history with the public, but they are clearly distinct in the character of their own medias. In recent years, museums extend their activities so far beyond the traditional function such as a variety of artifacts collection, preservation and research, as it includes permanent and special exhibits, learning in museums, history-cultural events and provide of digital information in the fields of the popularization of history.
