비코를 이해하기 위하여

Understanding Vico

이 논문은 우리나라에서는 아직도 그렇게 널리 알려지지 않은 이탈리아의 학자 잠바티스타 비코의 생애와 사상을 전파시키는 것이 목적이다. 그것을 위해 먼저 비코가 어떻게 사람들의 관심을 끌게 되었고, 이제는 인문학의 거의 모든 분야에서 그를 추앙하게 되었는지 그 과정을 살핀다. 간단히 말해 그는 추종자들의 열성적인 노력에 의해 인지도를 유지해 왔는데, 『새로운 학문』의 영역본 출간과, 탄생 300주년을 기리는 학술대회를 통해 사상사의 중요 인물로 부각되기에 이른 것이다. 그 다음으로 비코의 생애와 저작이 갖는 의미를 밝혔고, 그것을 비코가 사용한 어원학과 관련시켜 구체적인 내용을 파악하려 했다. 어원학이 특히 중요한 의미를 갖는 이유는 비코의 철학 자체가 ‘시작’의 철학이라 말할 수 있고, 그의 철학에서 핵심이 되는 언어의 중요성에 대한 인식이 상상력을 발동시키는 어원에 대한 그의 생각을 통해 더욱 명확하게 구현되기 때문이다.

This essay purports to make more widely known the main ideas of the Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico. In the first place, it tries to show that he evaded complete oblivion through the efforts of such enthusiasts as Michelet, Joyce and others. Vico came to public attention after the standard English translation of his magnum opus, The New Science, by Thomas Goddard Bergin and Max Harold Fisch. And then, there was an international symposium commemoration the 300th anniversary of his birth in 1968. Giorgio Tagliacozzo was the key figure behind this massive conference, which came out as Giambattista Vico: An International Symposium. Then it elucidates the meaning of Vico s main ideas with regard to his use of etymology. Vico s is a philosophy of beginning, and that is why in Vico etymology is so important. It exemplifies his philosophy of imagination in its essence.
