Sean O’Casey’s Search for an Irish Hero: Red Roses for Me

숀 오케이시의 극작가로서의 목표 중 하나는 진정한 아일랜드의 영웅이 될 만한 극적 주인공을 만드는 것이었다. 더블린 삼부작을 비롯한 초기작의 남성 인물들은 대개 현실도피자이거나 인생 패배자였다. 『주노와 공작』의 잭 보일, 『총잡이의 그림자』의 도날 다보렌과 시머스 쉴즈 등은 조국의 식민현실을 극복하려 시도하거나 궁핍한 가족의 부양책임을 다 하려는 어떤 노력도 하지 않는 무책임한 인간들이다. 『은제컵』의 해리 히건은 모두의 관심과 사랑을 받는 청년으로 공동체의 미래를 책임질 지도자가 될 것으로 예상되었다. 그런데 그가 용병으로 출정한 제국주의 전쟁에서 불구가 되어 돌아오자 아무도 거들떠보지 않는 천덕꾸러기 신세가 된다. 오케이시는 여러작품에서 남성인물보다 여성인물에게 더 많은 신뢰를 품고 있으며, 심지어 남성 영웅신화를 냉소적인 관점으로 바라보았다. 『나에게 붉은 장미를』의 아야몬 브레이던은 오케이시가 만든 가장 완벽한 지도자상의 남성인물이다. 아야몬은 종교적으로, 정치적으로 분열되어 있는 사람들의 정신적 통합을 위해 매우 다른 종파와 사상의 이웃, 그리고 동료들을 포용하는 자세를 가 진 인물이다. 아야몬의 목표는 사람들을 하나의 집단으로 규합하여 노동투쟁에 나서는 것이다. 3막의 리피 강 다리장면은 더블린 시가 석양빛에 의해 환상의 천국으로 변화하는 현장이 된다. 환상의 천국은 아야몬의 꿈이며 그의 비전이다. 환상은 오래 가지 않는다. 해가 지자 아야몬은 사람들을 뒤로 하고 파업에 참가하여 진압경찰의 총에 맞아 사망한다. 3막의 시점은 부활절 전야로서 아야몬의 죽음은 예수의 부활과 유사한 차원에서 해석될 수 있다.

Most of the male characters in Sean O’Casey’s early plays are buffoons, or escapists who indulge in self-delusion instead of facing reality. O’Casey’s male characters are usually satirized, or ridiculed by the author himself because of their mental hollowness and irresponsibility in contrast with the female characters who resemble his mother. Ayamonn Breydon in Red Roses for Me is the most accomplished male protagonist and the leader material in all of O’Casey plays. Ayamonn’s main concern is to participate in the upcoming railroad and transport workers’ strike to gain a one shilling wage raise a week. Ayamonn’s popularity in the neighborhood draws people around him because he never lets down any of his friends as long as they are earnest in maintaining their ideas. When Dublin is transformed into a fantasy world with the light from the sunset in Act 3, Loory says, “The Sword of Light is shining.” Minor characters like Eeada, Dympna, Finnoola and the nameless men and workers participating in the strike are the ones that cooperate to make the Irish male hero of the era named Ayamonn. They seem even characterless and act little in relation with the other main characters until the action reaches Act 3. Ayamonn as a leader exists because he is looked up to and sought after by the minor characters. Ayamonn presides over the transformation of the city in Act 3. He dances with one of them, Finnoola. Ayamonn is a revolutionary ready to put down his life for the sake of his fellow workers. Ayamon’s funeral coincides with the eve of the Easter so that his death is interpreted in the context of the Jesus’ resurrection.
