차별과 전복의 언어: 캐씨 박 홍의 시의 한국어 사용에 관한 연구

The Language of Discrimination and Subversion: A Study of the Korean Language in Cathy Park Hong’s Translating Mo’um

이 연구는 캐씨 박 홍의『몸 번역하기󰡕를 중심으로 한국어가 사용되는 시들을 분석함으로써 이민자 시인에게 모국어가 갖는 의미를 살펴보고, 소수 언어로서의 한국어가 주류 사회에 어떻게 비추어지고, 시인이 어떻게 지배 언어와 소수 언어의 관계를 새롭게 설정할 가능성을 모색하고 있는지를 검토한다. 표제시「몸 번역하기｣에서 한국어는 시인의 감각적 경험과 밀착되어 육체의 물질성을 표현하는 몸의 언어로 규정된다. 그렇지만「동물원｣에서 이질적인 동양인의 몸과 동일시된 한국어는 주류 사회에 의해 알아들을 수 없는 동물의 언어로 인식되고 인종 차별의 근거가 된다. 시인은「통과 의례｣에서 “콜라주 되고,” “쪼개진,” “파편들” 등의 표현을 통해 이중 언어의 구사자로서 소수 인종의 분열된 언어적 정체성을 암시한다. 그러나 한국어를 바라보는 부정적 시선을 바로잡기 위하여 시인은「“바가 지” 번역하기｣에서 한국어에 생소한 독자들이 서로 다른 문맥 속에서 바가지의 의미를 추측하는 과정을 통해 미국 사회에서 이민자 여성이 겪는 경험과 이질적인 타자의 언어를 이해할 것을 요구한다. 바가지로 대표되는 한국어는 지배 언어의 독자들에게 소수 언어를 바라보는 자기중심적, 우월주의적 시각을 성찰할 기회를 제공하는 것이다.「모든 최음제｣는 여성 화자를 앞세워 한국어로 지배 언어 사용자를 지배하고 조종하는 전복적 시도를 보여준다. 시인은 백인 남성을 성적으로 흥분시키는 한국어로 그의 육체를 지배하려는 여성 화자를 통하여 지배 언어와 소수 언어 사이의 새로운 관계 설정을 모색한다.

This paper explores what the Korean language means for Cathy Park Hong, a second generation Korean-American poet, and how it is accepted by the dominant culture, and how she attempts to establish a new relationship between major language and minor language by analyzing the poems of her first collection, Translating Mo’um. In “Translating Mo’um,” the title poem of the collection, Hong defines Korean as he language closely associated with physical experiences caused by pain. In “Zoo,” however, the Korean language equivalent to the foreign body is compared to an unintelligible animal language which discriminates and alienates its speakers. The poet implies that bilingual subjects may experience the sense of divided identity by using “collaged,” “cracked,” and “fragments” in “Rite of Passage.” In “Translating ‘Pagaji,’” while readers rely on the poet’s contextual clues within each line to catch the proper meaning of “Pagaji,” they are expected to experience the same embarrassment of immigrants who face the multiple meanings of English vocabulary in different contexts. This experience leads readers to reconsider their self-centered supremacist view on foreign languages. “All Aphrodisiacs” shows the white male lover dominated by the female speaker who turns him on with untranslated Korean words. In this poem, Hong tries to subvert the conventional hierarchy between major language and minor language.
