Few studies have dealt with English for specific purposes (ESP) for student athletes although the needs for English use in sports have increased due to internationalization. To fill this gap, the present study examined the needs of college student athletes for English for specific purposes education by inquiring about their perceived English ability, needs for English learning, and specific needs for ESP courses. Approximately 285 students enrolled in a sports university participated in the study; 278 survey questionnaires were analyzed. Findings suggest that the student athletes perceived their English ability low regarding speaking and listening in particular. They felt strong needs for English learning for their future careers such as athletes or leaders overseas and for information exchange with foreign athletes or leaders. Regarding the ESP education, they preferred efficient classes that reflect their basic abilities, immediate needs for practical uses, and their specialties in sport areas taught by ex-elite athletes who are able to teach English. Additionally, there was a significant correlation and cause and effect relationship among the three variables: perceived English ability, needs for English learning, and specific needs for ESP courses. Perceived English ability caused needs for English learning while needs for English learning caused specific needs for ESP courses. Ultimately, pedagogical implications for faculty in both athletic and English programs are addressed.
