The inappropriate use of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents plays a significant role in increasing the prevalence of antibiotic resistance, which results in an increased burden of disease and medical costs. However, no studies have rigorously analyzed the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and drugs for antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in Korea. Therefore, this study investigated the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. An analysis of antibiotic consumption using health insurance claims data showed that the usage of antibiotics rose from 26.3 defined daily doses (DDD)/1000 population/day in 2011 to 28 DDD/1000 population/day in 2015. A notable trend was that the consumption of macrolides (J01FA) steadily increased, from 3.83 DDD/1000 population/day in 2011 to 4.32 DDD/1000 population/day in 2015. We concluded that 28 adults per 1000 population per day consumed antibiotics nationally in 2015. This study provides basic statistical findings useful for health policy related to antibiotics management.
