후스는 위클리프주의자인가

Is Jan Hus a Wyclifite? - Focusing on the Debates about Wyclifism between 15th and 19-20th Century -

유럽의 14-15세기는 대혼란의 시기였다. 교회대분열(the Great Schism)로 야기된 교황권의 약화와 권위의 실추는 또 다른 개혁 운동을 준비하게끔 하였다. 그런 상황 속에서 카렐 4세의 등장과 프라하 대학의 설립은 체코 역사에 중요한 기점이 된다. 후스는 프라하 대학의 총장으로서, 그리고 베들레헴 성당의 설교자로서 위클리프주의를 자신의 개혁 사상에 선택적으로 차용함으로써 로마 가톨릭의 오류를 수정하고자 했다. 그는 먼저 중세의 보편적인 교회의 권위에 의문을 제기하였으며, 성서의 권위를 앞세워 체코 고유의 민족성을 띤 종교개혁 운동을 지향하였다. 후스의 개혁사상은 기존의 교회에 만연해 있던 계서적인 위계질서를 탈피한 평등한 사회를 이룩하고자 하는 하나의 혁명적 성격을 띤 사상운동이자 실천 운동의 성격을 지녔다. 후스가 주도하는 개혁 운동이 프로테스탄트 종교개혁 이전에 중세의 보편 교회에 저항한 가장 성공적인 개혁운동중의 하나로 평가받는 이유다. 후스의 위클리프주의 혐의는 평생을 따라 다닌 족쇄였다. 그로 인해서 그는 콘스탄츠 공의회에서 화형을 당하게 된다. 민족적 정체성을 바로 세우고자 사회 개혁으로 나아간 그의 개혁 사상은 100년 후 루터와 칼뱅의 종교 개혁에 큰 영향을 끼치게 되었다.

Europe was in a period of great turmoil in 14th and 15th centuries. The weakening of the papacy and the loss of its authority, caused by the Great Schism, set the stage for another reform movement. In this tough and dangerous age, the emergence of Karel Ⅳ and the establishment of the University of Prague(Univerzita Karlova v Praze) was an important starting point in Czech history. As a rector and a preacher of Bethlehem Chapel, Jan Hus(1369-1415) tried to correct the errors of the Roman Catholic Church by selectively borrowing from Wyclifism in his reform thoughts. First of all, posing questions the authority of the medieval church, he aimed for asserting the authority of the Scripture while expanding religious reform movement in his own national characteristics in Czech. Hus reform thoughts, against the late medieval church, had distinctive features evaluated as one of the most successful reform movements prior to the Protestant Reformation. The charge of Wyclifism in Hus thought put fetters on him throughout his life, and it caused him to be burned at the state at the Council of Constance. After 100 years, his reform thought, carrying out social reform to set national identity right, had big influences on the Reformation of Luther and Calvin.
