The Study of Background Knowledge and Their Role in the Translation Process

This article is devoted to the study of background knowledge and their role in the translation process. In the study, the term “background knowledge” refers to the knowledge common to the participants of the communicative act. The purpose of this work is to explore the concept of “background knowledge” and consider their role in the translation process, which is a special kind of intercultural interaction. The goal is implemented in the following tasks: describe the content of the concept of “background knowledge” and approaches to its definition, to give a classification of background knowledge, to consider the structure of background knowledge, to describe some features of the translation of verbal background knowledge. The relevance of this work is that although at present the question of the functions, structure and content of background knowledge remains open, but the role of background knowledge in the process of intercultural communication is very important. Studying linguocultural systems and comparing them, researchers identify the places of contact and differences of cultural backgrounds, manifested in languages, which contributes to the expansion of the dialogue of cultures and the emergence of interculture. The comparative analysis of Russian and Korean realities carried out in the study, the background information embedded in the languages, is intended to expand the background knowledge of people learning Russian and culture and wishing to use it in their professional activities.
