영제국 식민지 이민의 확산과 영국인의 정체성

The British through the Diffusion of the British Empire and the Immigration to the White Settlers Colonies

본고는 빅토리아 시대에서 에드워드 시기 영제국 백인 정착 식민지로의 영국인들의 이민이민을 가져오게 된 영국의 대내외적 상황 및 사회ㆍ경제적 이유들을 살펴보면서 식민지 이민을 통해 이 시기 영국이 수용하며 변화시켜 나간 ‘영국인’에 대한 사고를 고찰해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 영국의 상황에 따른 다양한 집단들의 식민지로의 이민 장려와 제국주의적 필요가 부합하는 이민 기획내의 영국 인종에 관한 증가된 관심을 살펴보고 있다. 이를 통해 영제국 식민지로의 이민이 결국 사회 · 경제적 목적뿐만 아니라 영제국 번영에 기여하는 새로운 “영국인의 정체성”을 형성하기 위한 사고의 변화를 나타냄을 관찰하고 있다. 이 과정에서 아일랜드, 스코틀랜드, 잉글랜드라는 영국 인종 내의 분리 사고가 영제국의 건조 및 영국 인종의 생존과 백인 인구의 배포라는 목적 실현을 위해 ‘앵글로 색슨이라는 통합된 영국인’으로 재탄생함을 주목하고 있다.

This paper studies on thinking of the British which was accepted and transformed by the British Empire through the immigration to the white colonies in the Victorian and the Edwardian period. And it also tries to look over the socio-economical states as well as the circumstances of England at home and abroad which brought the immigration of her people. For these purposes, this paper examines that there had been increasing interests within the projects of immigration to the colonies in which the encouragement of immigration by different organizations met the imperialistic needs. It discovers that the immigration to the British colonies shows the changes of thinking to form new identity of Great Britain which contributed not only to the socio-economic goal but also to the prosperity of the British Empire. Through the study it observes that the idea of separate nations among the English, the Irish, and the Celtic was rebuilt as the concept of the united British based on the idea of Anglo-saxon, for achieving the purpose of distributing the whites and surviving the British nation as well as establishing the British Empire.
