악순환의 고리? : 발칸 유럽, 이슬람 그리고 오리엔탈리즘

Balkan Europe, Islam and “Nesting Orientalisms”: Its Reproduction of Vicious Circle

본 논문은 동유럽에서 벌어지고 있는 오리엔탈리즘과 관련된 다양한 현상들을 살펴보고 이를 비판하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 오리엔탈리즘은 원래 17세기 자본주의 부상과 함께 세계사의 주인공으로 등장한 서유럽이 오리엔트세계를 후진적이고 전제적인 세계로 비하시키며 선입감을 만들어 이를 확산시킨 것을 에드워드 사이가 비판한 현상이다. 본 논문에서는 동유럽 맥락에서 이러한 오리엔탈리즘적 차별과 배제가 어떻게 벌어지고 있는 지를 비판적으로 고찰하고 있다. 서구에 의해 동유럽을 대상으로 자행되는 차별뿐만 아니라, 동유럽 사람들이 같은 동유럽 사람들을 대상으로 행하는 차별과 비하의 시선을 고찰하고 있다. 이 차별적 위계질서 매김에서 가장 큰 피해자는 바로 발칸 유럽의 무슬림들이라 할 수 있다, 이들은 분명 동유럽 사람들임에도 불구하고, 9·11 사태 이후엔 ‘이슬람 테러리스트’로 묘사되는 등, 동유럽내의 뿌리 깊은 오리엔탈리즘 희생자로 고통 받고 있다.

The present study aims to examine the phenomenon of “nesting orientalism” found widespread across Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe. The nesting orientalism is a coinage made by Milica Bakic-Hayden to describe the reproduction of orientalism not only against the people of Eastern Europe by their counterparts in the West, but also exclusion and discrimination against the same Eastern Europeans by the same Eastern Europeans. To take an example, within the sphere of Eastern Europe, those who are located more towards the West look down upon those who are more towards the East. The phenomenon has, far from disappeared, been reproduced as if nesting in new places. The paper looks into some of the historical instances of the nesting orientalism and criticize the discrimination made not only the Westerners but also by the Eastern Europeans against the Eastern Europeans.
