조지 워싱턴의 창조적 리더십의 길 (농민)

George Washington’s Creative Leadership in Farming

본 논문의 목적은 조지 워싱턴이 군인과 정치가로서 못지않게 농민으로서도 창조적 리더라는 점을 밝히는데 있다. 군인으로서 적을 물리치는 일에, 정치가로서 새로운 국가를 세우는 일에 몰두했다면, 농민으로서의 워싱턴은 어떻게 하면 국민들이 보다 질 좋은 많은 먹거리를 창조해 낼 수 있을까에 몰두했다. 담배를 버리고 밀을 선택한 것은 워싱턴이 농업 분야에서 창조적 길을 간 첫 번째 일이었다. 워싱턴이 유기농 비료를 만들고 윤작시스템을 창조해 적용한 토지 개량사업은 농업생산성을 높이기 위한 하나의 창조적 방법이었다. 씨를 뿌리고 곡식을 수확하고 퇴비를 만드는 일 등의 농사 전반에 걸친 농기구의 기계화는 부족한 노동력 문제를 해결하고 질 좋은 곡물을 생산해 내기 위한 워싱턴의 창조적 노력이었다. 또한 워싱턴은 농업에 관한 정보를 공유하고 농업발전을 견인시키기 위해 농업협회와 같은 농업조직을 간절히 원했다. 이것은 농업의 미래를 위한 창조적 노력이었다. 그의 노력은 바로 결실을 보지 못했지만 그가 뿌린 씨앗은 19세기 중반을 지나면서 결실을 맺었다. 책을 읽고, 선진 농업 전문가들과 교류하고, 연구하고, 실험하고, 때로는 실패하고, 또 시도하는 등 워싱턴은 이런 일을 리더 입장의 사람들이 해야 할 책무라고 생각했다. 그래서 워싱턴은 마운트 버넌을 비롯한 그의 농장들을 거대한 농업 실험실로 만들었다. 오늘날 마운트 버넌에는 워싱턴이 농민으로 실험하고 연구했던 다양한 시도들 - 유기농 비료를 만드는 법, 윤작시스템, 쟁기와 같은 여러 농업기계 등 - 이 잘 복원되어 있다. 워싱턴은 이러한 실험을 통해 얻은 결과를 농업협회와 같은 조직을 통해 미국 전역으로 전파하기를 원했다. 워싱턴은 역사상 최초의 민주공화국을 건설하면서 언젠가 이 위대한 정치실험이 인류가 만드는 마지막 형태의 정치체제가 될 것이라고 확신했다. 워싱턴은 무한한 땅과 자연자원의 풍성함을 가진 이 나라 “미국이 언젠가 세계의 곡식창고가 될 것”이라는 위대한 비전을 가지고 있었다. 건국의 아버지들 중 그 누구도 워싱턴과 같은 비전을 가진 사람이 없었다. 워싱턴이야말로 미국 농업의 진정한 아버지가 아닌가 생각한다.

The purpose of this paper is to report that George Washington was a creative leader not only as a soldier and politician but also as a farmer. As a soldier he devoted himself to defeating the enemy, as a politician he gave himself up to establishing a new nation, and as a farmer he was absorbed in creating a better quality of agricultural product for his own people. His choice for wheat over tobacco in farming was the first example of his creative leadership. His creative methods in farming are shown in that, to promote agricultural productivity, he made organic fertilizer and first introduced land improvement project applying the crop rotation system. Mechanization of farming tools for such as sowing, harvesting, and making compost was his creative efforts for producing quality crops. In addition, he earnestly wanted to establish agricultural organization such as an agricultural association to share information about farming and to bring agricultural development. This is another example of his creative efforts for brighter future of farming. His efforts were not immediately realized, but his creativity served as a basis for an agricultural association organized in mid 19 centuries. Washington believed that people in leading position should read books, associate with experts in advanced farming, research, experiment, occasionally fail in attempting, and attempt again. This is why he made his farm plantations including that in Mount Vernon huge laboratories. Today, the outcomes from his various attempts such as how to make organic fertilizer, the crop rotation system, various farming machines such as a plow are well restored to their original state in Mount Vernon. Establishing the first democratic republic ever in history, Washington had a conviction that this great political experiment would be the last form of political system made by mankind. Washington cherished a grand vision that ‘America with vast land and abundant natural resources would someday become a grain storehouse of the world.’ Nobody among founding fathers showed a vision like Washington’s. I believe that Washington is indeed a real pioneer of American agriculture.
