공간의 문제는 철학을 비롯한 다양한 학문에서 다루어지는 중요한 요소이다. 문학에서도 공간에 대한 연구는 다양하게 이루어지고 있는데, 본고에서는 무엇보다 집 이라고 하는 공간에 대한 문제를 다루고자 한다. 유럽문학에서 집 혹은 장소가 구체적이고 의미 있게 등장하기 시작한 것은 19세기로 유럽이 세계로 팽창해가는 과정과 부르주아계급의 형성과 소멸 등과 연관한다. 이런 과정에서 드넓은 외부세계와 구별되는 개인적이고 내부적인 세계에 흥미를 두게 되었고 인간의 ‘존재와 의식’에 대한 관심이 증폭되었다. 󰡔트로야의 빌라󰡕는 체코 작가 이반 클리마(Ivan Klíma)가 실제 존재하는 프라하의 한 빌라에서 경험했던 것을 바탕으로 한 단편이다. 이 작품 속에서 집이라는 장소는 실질적으로 존재하는 현실의 공간이면서 동시에 문학 작품 안에서 다른 기능을 하는 가상의 공간이다. 작가의 이미지나 환상이 어우러져 만들어내는 가상의 공간이 현실의 공간을 새로운 의미와 기능의 공간으로 만들어내는 것이다. 어린아이의 시선으로 바라본 이 공간은 처음에는 낯선 공간이었지만 점차 친밀의 공간이 된다. 공간을 점유하는 다른 사람들과의 심리적인 안정은 공간에 새로운 가치를 부여하는 것이다. 이런 친밀의 공간은 이 공간에 있는 또래 친구들뿐만 아니라 어른들과 함께 여러 놀이를 하는 놀이의 공간이다. 하지만 즐거움과 행복이 가득한 놀이의 공간은 시간의 상관관계 속에서 전쟁과 연관한 트라우마의 공간이었다는 것을 알 수 있다. 어린이에게는 외부의 전쟁과는 격리된 친밀의 공간이었지만 어른들에게는 외부세계와 연결되어 있고 마침내 삶의 터전에서 쫓겨날 수밖에 없음을 느끼는 두려움의 공간으로 기능한 것이다. 이처럼 공간은 그 공간을 점유하는 사람의 기억과 추억과 함께 새로운 가치를 획득하거나 상실한다. 공간은 사람이 존재하는 그 이유 때문에 가치가 주어지는 것이다.

This paper focuses on Ivan Klíma’s short story, Vila v Tróji (Villa in Troja), which was written on the basis of the author’s real experience. The space of the villa is a real space – a space that really exists – and, at the same time, an imaginary space. The imaginary space, created by the interconnection of the author’s visions and ideas, replaces the real space and adds new meanings and functions to it. This space, seen through a child’s eyes, is unknown and unfamiliar at first, but it gradually becomes intimate and familiar. The mental stability of other people who occupy the given space imparts a new value to it. This familiar and intimate space is a space of games in which the hero plays not only with friends of the same age but also with adults. However, as we learn, this space of games – full of happiness and joy – is interconnected with the time and space of trauma related to war. For the child, the space was intimate and isolated from the war outside; for the adults, however, it was connected to the outside world and was a space of fear. They felt that they would be driven away from their base. Thus, the space gains new meanings or loses old ones, depending on the memories of the people who occupy it.
