Political Thoughts of Olympe de Gouges: Analysis of Political Writings in Early Stage of the French Revolution

  • 46

Olympe de Gouges expressed sharp criticism to persons who were instigating the people by seditious speeches and writings without presenting the concrete method for the welfaire of all Nation. To Gouges, evils of France were made before accession to the throne of Louis . She insisted that the deficit which ⅩⅥ was discrediting France, had taken place under the most gorgeous and the most flourishing reign. To Gouges, the deficit was increased under Louis , Louis ⅩⅤ consequently could not be able to prevent the catastrophe. She thought that ⅩⅥ his predecessors had made a mistake, some without knowing it, others voluntarily. What was then the means which Gouges would find suitable to liberate from debts of the State? It would be a voluntary and patriotic tax, of which the Nation would applaud. Gouges thought that this memorable action of french heart would transmit to the posterity and would form the most singular and the most remarkable period of annales of the Monarchy. She thought that the States-General would send out rays of light upon all methods which could contribute to acquit debts of the State. To Gouges, the richness of the State is the fundamental stone of the happiness of people. She represented that dangers of the Nation were those of the rich. Gouges had the conviction that the charitable king, with the help of his States-General, would uproot soon evil practices which were surrouding the kingdom of France. She thought that France at that time was standing on the brink of ruin and the safety of her fatherland was wholly depending on the successful meeting of States-General. Political thoughts of Gouges, in short, implied patriotism, civism, constitutionalism, parliamentarism, feminism, pacifism and the idea of anti-slavery.
