Andrew Jackson s Rotation in Office and His Republican Experiment

  • 38

After his inauguration, President Andrew Jackson started a new experiment in order to change radically the bureaucratic reshuffle in the central government officers. This revolutionary changes from the old bureaucratic officers to the new peoples provoked traditional Washington elite societies to charge that the President destroyed the American Political system, and finally would make political crisis. The traditional historians and observers during the Jacksonian age had protested and regarded the President s radical rotation system in office as the most notorious demagogue political agenda ever tried. I don’t think that this opinion is correct answer to evaluate the president s experiments. First of all, the most important needed consideration about his enforcement of the rotation in officer before evaluating his enforcement this policy is why he could not but try this so-called revolutionary policy at that time. The Washington s bureaucratic system before Andrew Jackson was mainly based on the elite-oriented aristocratic political machines. This traditional historians had never regarded his official seats as civic society s servant or service part. Washington elite government officers had used government money and embezzled for their political activities and private usurpation. And Jackson could never understand this phenomenon. And so, after he achieved his political triumph by the help of the people, he tried to embattle over this officer holders. Finally he had succeeded final combat against this people-this Washington elite group. Some people said his object was only aimed to discard his political foes and former President s political friends. Also, the President s political thought had to be regarded in this rotation in office. Specially, he had indulged his energy to enforce his republican political-economy system into the in the political fields in Washington. He thought all the higher office in Washington central government had to be opened to the general ordinary people. And finally, he had succeeded his republican system into the Washington federal government officer system.
