A Study of English Free Merchants in Asian Sea

  • 33

The 17th and 18th centuries were the Age of Mercantilism in terms of the English economic ideology. Above all, those were the days when the English East India Company was active. However, in reality, the Great Britain was prepared by the fact that free merchants , who took the active part outside the restriction and control of the so-called East India Company, gradually accumulated the power in each region of Asia and had the commercial experience in a vast sea area over the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. In this thesis, the author reviewed such an activity of the English free merchants(East India Company, etc.) in Asia with the focus on items in the 17th and 18th centuries. In Chapter 1, the condition of the Asian Sea in the Age of Mercantilism was reviewed. In Chapter 2, the relationship between the Dutch East India Company and the English private trading merchants was examined. In Chapter 3, the English free merchants in the latter part of the 17th century were studied. In Chapter 4, the English free merchants in the early part of the 18th century were studied. Although the East India Company concentrated on the trade between the Europe and Asia, the private trading merchants discovered the stage of activity in the expanded Asian Sea. In the 19th century, when the trading of the East India Company was open to all the englishmen, the system to make it possible to use it at any time was already built during the 18th century.
