The Byzantine Icons through The Annunciation

  • 37

The purpose of this paper is to review the characters of the byzantine icons through The Annunciation . There are some different things in the icon The Annunciation between Western and Eastern Europe, especially the Eastern Orthodox Church in the field of iconography. The major different thing shows in the icons of the Western Europe is the lily that Gabriel holds in the hand. It is important to point out the fact that the lily Gabriel holds in his hand does not appear in the icons of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Gabriel always holds the scepter in the icons of the Eastern Orthodox Church. This change that Gabriel holds the lily instead of the scepter as the symbol of the archangel had been appeared from the beginning of the Renaissance in the icons of the Western Europe. The lily that Gabriel holds in his hand symbolizes the virginity or the immaculate conception of Mary. The regulations for the icons had not strictly get the influence from the Renaissance in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The synods of the Eastern Orthodox Church also forbid the iconographic changes in the icons. But in the Western Europe the power of the human reason freed the painters from the influence or decisions of the church. Especially the emphasis of the Roman Catholic Church about the immaculate conception and virginity of the Mary calls for the change in the hand of Gabriel from the scepter to the lily.
