The main purpose of this study is to learn the historical lessons from the gates(scandals) of the Grant government(l869 -1876). How could Unconditional surrender so brilliant and intrepid in Civil War commit such follies and insensibilities as president? What were the backgrounds and the causes of Grantism(corruption)? The voters who elected Grant in 1868 were weary of politics. For more than a decade, the nation was tom by Civil War and then by the tensions of Reconstruction The unsavory political scheming surrounding the impeachment of Andrew Johnson had aroused genuine disgust. It was a relief at last to get away from the petty politician. Unawarely, they choose Grant, only being popular with the people and being ignorant and confused, as their president. A new class of men replaced them -pushing, cynical fellows who had made fortunes by selling shoddy goods to the government, by speculating in necessities, and by other schemes in which the public pocket was picked. At war s end, this crew entered into an alliance with grasping politicians and operated with the same ruthlessness and greed as before. They organized new party, Republicans from north. The inability to solve the problems of sectionalism and race produced a general disillusionment that led many Americans to mistrust idealism in any form. On the surface, society was governed bt a severe Victorian moral code, but passion raged behind the scenes. So Mark Twain called the Gilded Age these days. Grant was an ignorant and confused president, and during his eight long years in blunder land, he was surrounded by mediocrities, self-seekers, and out-and-out rascals who made his administration into a high-priced tollbooth for government favors. He was had no political horse sense, no experience with civilian office, and no grasp of politics. He was not to be trustful. He was to be reserved to all. This reserve made to be tainted with the worst ugly gates in American History. The appointments of Grant is to be weighty. His judgement of the appointment is not ability, efficiency, and capacity but cordiality and nepotism. His friends and his relationship corrupted White House and national power positions. To think about present Korea, being gate and gate, Grantism resemble Korean gates in backgrounds and causes. Maybe, even though the backgrounds and causes of gates was filled with, is the responsibility of the highest leader important than the other things?
