The Abe Administration’s Memory of Meiji and its Politics : Focused on the Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Meiji Restoration

  • 152

This study investigated the contents of ‘Admiration of the Meiji Period’ restored by the ‘Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Meiji Restoration’ promoted by the Abe Administration and its meaning in the political schedule of ‘Constitutional Reform’ planned by the Abe Administration. The contents are summarized as follows: Politician Shinzo Abe repeatedly, appeal his political belief’ that the amendment of the post-war Japanese Constitution would be a ‘symbol and concrete method for the recovery of independence’ to the present Japanese ‘people,’ depending on the ‘memory’ of ‘Meiji people/Japanese people’s struggle’ for the ‘amendment of unequal treaty’ for the independence of Japan. As objective conditions for the ‘Amendment of the Constitution’ were built up starting 2016, Abe expanded the political rhetoric of the ‘150th Anniversary of the Meiji Restoration,’ which has been limited to his district constituency to the ‘politics’ on the national dimension for the ‘recognition of the strength of Japan by learning the spirit of the Meiji Restoration.’ Consequently, the memory of Meiji Restoration constructed by the Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Meiji Restoration plays a role in allowing the Abe Administration to put an end to the post-war system and justify the ‘politics’ of the independent ‘Amendment of the Constitution’ to restore strong Japan.
