This study discusses cultural appropriation and adaptation in Macbeth, King of the Joseon which is a Korean stage adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. This Korean Shakespeare production was financially supported by Korean government and first performed in 2016 with an aim of making Shakespeare works more accessible to the local people, and traditional Korean culture better known to local and global audience. While a plot and main characters of the source text remain unchanged, the historical background of Scotland changed into the Joseon dynasty and Korean “scenographic and physical modes” such as costumes and settings. As the program leaflet introduces, this Korean performance offers a new way of appreciating Macbeth with traditional Korean music, a media art and a contemporary modern dance as an example of intertextual and multicultural application beyond fidelity.
