고등학교 『한국사 』 교과서의 발해사 서술 현황과 그 문제점

High School History Textbooks, Their Description of the History of Balahe and Its Problems

현재 한국사학계에서는 당위로서의 남북국시대론과 현실로서의 통일신라론이 논쟁중이다. 물론 후자에서도 발해를 한국사의 일부로 인식하고 있지만 신라와 발해의 위상이 같지 않다고 보고 있다. 현행 고등학교 한국사 교과서들도 통일신라론에 의거하여 서술하고 있다. 그래서 통일 신라의 성립 이후에 발해의 건국과 발전을 배치함으로써 삼국에서 남북국으로의 전개 과정을 단절시키고 발해를 부수적인 존재로 드러내는 문제점을 야기하고 있다. 발해사를 한국사로 인식하는 이상, 발해사를 한국사 속에서 부각시키는 구성 방식을 고민할 필요가 있다. 현행 교과서들의 또다른 문제점은 통일 신라의 영역이 대동강~원산만이라고 규정한 것이다. 나당전쟁 직후 임진강에 그쳤던 신라의 서북 경계선이 대동강까지 진출할 수 있었던 것은 발해와 당의 충돌 때문이었지만, 이에 대한 서술이 없다. 또한 발해가 대동강 이북을 포함한 요동지역을 차지했다고 서술하지만, 대동강~원산만을 경계로 서로 접한 신라와 발해 가 거의 교섭이 없었던 사실을 설명하지 못하고 있다. 당시 한반도 서북부를 포함한 요동지역은 신라와 발해와 당 삼국간의 완충 지대였다. 이처럼 현행 교과서는 신라와 발해를 각각 단절적으로 서술하는 경향이 많다. 발해사를 한국사에 포함한다는 당위론에서 벗어나 신라와 발해를 하나의 단위로서 서술하려는 노력이 필요하다.

Korean historical academics are arguing over the North-South States Period theory as Sollen versus the Unified Silla theory as Sein. Although the latter recognizes Balhae as part of Korean history, it does not see that Silla and Balhae have the same status. Current high school Korean history textbooks focus on the Unified Silla theory. They thus place the founding and development of Balhae after the establishment of Unified Silla, thus cutting off the process of developing into the South-North States from Three Kingdoms, and presenting Balhae as a subsidiary state. This is causing problems. So long as the history of Balhae is recognized as part of Korean history, there is a need to think seriously of how to highlight the history of Balhae in the Korean history. Yet another problem of the current textbooks is that they define the territory of Silla as far as the border line of Daedong River to Wonsan Bay. Right after the Silla-Tang war, Silla had its northwestern border line just as far as the Imjin River, but could extend it to the Daedong River because of Balhae-Tang confrontation, which was not described in the textbooks. Further, they describe Balhae as occupying the Liaodong area including the area north of the Daedong River, but they fail to explain how Silla and Blahe, neighboring each other by the border of Daedong River to Wonsan Bay, had little diplomatic relationships. The then Liadong area, including the northwest Korean peninsula, was a buffer zone among three states of Silla, Balhae and Tang. As such, current textbooks are significantly inclined to present a disconnected description of Silla and Balhae. There is a need to describe Silla and Balhae as a unit away from having to include the history of Balhae in the Korean history.
