A Study on the Difference of Self-esteem According to Appearance Management Attitude in Adolescents

The goal of this study was to try and find ways to improve the self esteem of adolescents through appearances management. This was done by looking at the differences in the self-esteem of adolescence based on their appearance management attitude. Survey materials were collected on 405 junior high and high school students in accordance with the laws pertaining to the administration of surveys. The results are as follows. There are differences in self-esteem based on gender. Female students assert their opinions more actively and their self respect in regards to their self conceptions within their families where higher than the male students. On the other hand, the male students showed greater willpower and better decision making skills than the female students. There are also differences based on the type of school. Junior high school students tend to kept better personal relationships than high school students. Also, general track high school students have higher self respect and self-confidence when compared to vocational track high school students. Adolescents were categorized into three groups depending on their interest in appearance management. The group with a low level of interest in appearance management, unlike the other groups, is not very active in personal relations and has a low level of self-assertion. Compared to the other groups, the group with a high level of interest in appearance management in not dependent on others and can make decisions without much difficulty. Thus, there is a relationship between appearance management attitude and self-esteem. This would imply that students self-esteem can be increased by guiding the self appearance management attitude of adolescents.
