This thesis aims it to investigate the style of qipao in its modernity in addition to understand the traditional culture of the costume in china by comparing the style of qipao of the heroine in the movie ‘Hwa yang yun hwa’ and the traditional one in terms of the silhouette, color and patterns. The method of study is by reviewing the periodical changes in the traditional ones through the investigation of the books, articles and periodicals, leading to the comparative analysis of the 20 styles of qipao of the heroine in the movie and the traditional qipao. Conclusively, in the aspect of silhouette, there was a great differences between them. The heroine in the movie showed the qipao of the hourglass silhouette reaching to the knee, instead of predominant H-silhouette reaching to the ankle in the traditional one. Second, in terms of the colors, simple colors such as the blue, green, purples, with contrasting color combinations taken as the background and outrageous patterns were used together with the gorgeous design in the movie rather than simple ones such as red, yellow and green, combined with the delicate pattern of the embroidery in the traditional one, yielding a marked differences between them. Third, the silk was used like in the traditional one, however the chiffon was used for the transparency and also the materials from various transformation of the silk made it a modern and feminine, giving a quite conspicuous contrast between them. Fourth, while the flower and animal pattern was mostly used in the traditional one, the one in the movie showed the pattern of the geometry and modernity by using the patterns such as plants, checks, stripe, spirals, camouflage, resulting in the sophistication of the metropolis. The style of qipao in the movie was from the reinterpretation of the classic qipao in its modern sense in view of the silhouette, colors, materials and patterns, finally help the passion of the characters in the movie transmitted emotionally, playing a leading role of making a moving emotion and the personality of the characters, afforded and clear on the part of the spectators.
