Recent increase in dietary sugar intake is closely related with the development of adolescent obesity and diet-related metabolic disorders. Especially, it has been suggested that excessive fructose intake is a risk factor for dyslipidemia, obesity, hepatic steatosis, insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndrome. However, evidence for the relationship between dietary sugar and metabolic regulation is not convincing and underlying molecular mechanisms are not clearly identified. Purpose of this review is to summarize the current situation of dietary sugar intake in Korea and worldwide, and to discuss the relationship between dietary sugar intake and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. From this review, we want to alert the potential health risk of excessive sugar intake and to suggest the guideline of appropriate sugar intake for Korean.
