A study on the effects of mid-life post-traumatic growth experience and religious coping on subjective sense of well-being

  • 114

The purposes of this study was to investigate the types and contents of trauma experienced by middle-age men and women residing within the metropolitan area and investigate the relationship of variables assumed to possess relations to mid-life post-traumatic growth experiences, religious coping and subjective well-being, to analyze the types of effects they have. To achieve such objectives, a trauma experience questionnaire measuring traumatic experiences across various perspectives, post-traumatic growth experience scale, subjective well-being scale, and religious coping scale were performed on the study participants. Results of investigating the relationship between post-traumatic growth experience, religious coping and subjective well-being through this study showed that the effect of post-traumatic growth experience on subjective well-being possessed a significant correlation across the entire group. More severe the level of change in trauma-induced self-awareness served to lower self-acceptance while higher levels of sensed well-being increased self-acceptance. In addition, religious coping was shown to have a effect on self-acceptance - higher levels of positive religious coping and lower levels of negative religious coping served to increase self-acceptance. Additionally, even within the analysis on the effects of religious coping on life goals and personal growth showed that positive religious coping had a positive (+) effect and negative religious coping had a negative (-) effect, indicating a correlation. Such results are suggestive that traumatic experiences can enhance or change psychological functions and that religious plays a significant and positive role in such processes.
