The Conditions, Problems and Alternatives of Single Person Households in Korea

The purpose of this study was to suggest the alternatives for single person households through speculating the current conditions and problems focusing on changes and diversity of Korean population structure and families. The results of this study are as follows: The ratio of single person households in Korea is 23.9% and it is expected to increase continuedly in the future. For adaptation and overcoming of the problems of single person households, social paradigm must be changed to the direction of reorganizing of marriage and family ideology, integrated networking among individual, family and society, enhancing the community consciousness, developing of healthy structure of society. Also the regional security system, reinforcement of income maintenance program, strengthening of social caring system, and psychological social support are needed for practical effectiveness of policies for single person households.
