Safe Living Conditions and Support Plan for the Rural Elderly

The purpose of this study was to provide basic data related to safe living conditions for the rural elderly and to develop a support plan for rural communities. To achieve this, health, diet, communal meals, economic conditions, farming environment, housing, accident occurrence, consumer behavior, happiness and loneliness were analyzed. Survey data was gathered in two steps. First, a questionnaire on community characteristics, such as demographic characteristics, community resources and environment was conducted with the 13~15 community leaders who live in a rural village. Second, 307 rural elderly people were interviewed in person with a questionnaire. The statistical methods used for data analysis were descriptive statistics with the Spss win 19.0 program. The major findings of this study showed the importance of personal nutrition, provision of communal meals, self-care behavior and concerns about the safety of community centers. The research demonstrated that community based welfare programs and safety programs are necessary in rural areas which contain an aged population to promote safe living condition for the rural elderly.
