Relationship of the Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Home Economics and Home Economics Teacher Efficacy

The purposes of this study were to investigate the extent of the Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Home Economics(hereafter, H-PCK) and to analyze the differences in H-PCK depending on their general characteristics and the level of teacher efficacy. H-PCK is composed of 5 components, namely, knowledge of perspective on Home Economics education, knowledge of Home Economics curriculum, knowledge of teaching strategies, knowledge on students understanding, and knowledge of context. Data were collected from 75 Home Economics teachers via a mailed survey and from 282 Home Economics teachers via an online survey. Descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation, t-test, and ANOVA results were reported using SPSS statistics 17.0. The results were as follows: First, the average H-PCK level was 3.82 on a 5-likert scale. The knowledge of perspective on Home Economics education was the highest. Second, examining differences in H-PCK according to their general characteristics, there were statistically significant differences in their majors and school types that they work in. Those who majored in home economics education got higher scores of 4 components of H-PCK than those who majored in others. Those who work in public schools got higher scores of knowledge of context than those who work in private schools. Third, examining differences in H-PCK according to the level of teacher efficacy, there were statistically significant differences in H-PCK depending on the level of teacher efficacy. In other words, the higher the level of the teacher efficacy, the higher the level of H-PCK.
