A Design Development of Nurse Uniform for Korean Traditional Medical Clinic Applying Image of Korean Traditional Costume

Korean traditional medicine contribute to make our country known to the world with its excellency. While the importance of the strategy in advertisement, the design of the uniform reflecting the image of the Korean traditional medical clinic seems to be insufficient, in view of the synergistic effect of the uniform for the image of the hospital. The purpose of this study is to provide the uniform design applying the image of Korean traditional costume after investigating the present situation and problems of the nurses uniforms in Korean traditional medical clinic. The method of the study is to research the former studies and present situation and finally to develop nurse uniform designs. Among the selective 7 Korean traditional medical clinic situated in Gwangju-city, the problems in nurse uniform drawn from the interview with the nurses and examining the factors causing satisfactory and unsatisfactory reaction were addressed with the consideration of the image of the Korean traditional medical clinic and picked up the orientation of the design and finally present 3 designs of nurse uniform applying the Korean traditional costume image. The first design underscores the traditional Korean women’s Chogori and Chima, as the fundamental composition with the cloud pattern being embroidered on the end of the cuffs, collar and pockets. The 2nd design’s collar and the cuffs were colored according to those of Hoiggang Chogori, reflecting the element of the traditional costume like the patchwork attached to the pockets. The 3rd design is making the balanced use of the traditional patchwork and knots eventually, integrated into the modern design. This way of the using the traditional costume image to the nurse uniform in a modernistic consideration would make this design of Korean traditional medical clinic unique and exclusive. We hope the development of the uniform design applying the Korean traditional costume image would play an important role, as this research being the triggering point.
