A Study on the Usage of Traditional Motif and Aesthetic Characteristics in Lie Sang Bong’s Collection

With the spread of Hallyu, Korea is trying to improve its national brand through fashion. Lee Sang Bong is a leading Korean designer who introduced the beauty of Korea to the world through his fashion. After he used Hangeul in fashion in 2006, he has received a lot of attention from around the world. This study examined the traditional motifs used in his designs, and analyzed its artistic characteristics through literature review and analysis of his Paris collection from F/W 2002 to S/S 2012. The findings are as follows. Of the traditional motifs, the form motif was used the least. For clothing, the form of motif was used, whereas for non-clothing items, it was used symbolically. The use of color combination was the second least frequent and its use was limited to several seasons. He used the harmony of Gansaek more frequently than that of the strong Jeongsaek. The pattern motif was used most frequently and diverse patterns were used. The pattern motif was used as a main motif for many seasons and more for non-clothing items than for clothing. And the use of the calligraphy of Hangeul as a pattern is a distinctive characteristic of his collection. The use of decoration methods and accessories was the second most frequent and the use of quilting is most noticeable. His use of traditional motifs shows the beauty of harmony, structure, and decoration. This beauty consists of the harmony of the Western silhouette and Korean details and that of clothing and non-clothing motifs. The beauty of structure inspired by architectural and geometrical elements is expressed through the structural expression of clothing. Hangeul expresses the beauty of structure with its pure geometrical elements. The beauty of decoration is expressed in many ways in his fashion. Hangeul has been used since 2006-07 F/W and has become the leading traditional motif used in his collection and a decoration that shows the designer s sensibility.
