The Effects of the Elderly’s Activities of Daily Living on Their Depression, and the Mediating Effects of the Elderly Ageism

  • 99

The present research aims to verify whether the elderly ageism has any mediating effects in the connection between the elderly’s activities of daily living (ADL) and their depression. The material from the research on the elderly living status in Daejeon, carried out in 2014, were investigated as secondary data; those from 65 years old elderlies, numbered 1,500, were analysed finally. The conclusions say that, first, 44% of the elderly have experienced ageism for the last one year; so it is certain that the problem of ageism is prevalent in our society. Second, the increase of ADL of the elderly may lower their experience of depression and ageism. Third, the experience of ageism has partial mediating effect in the connection between the elderly’s ADL and their depression. With these, practical suggestions were made in the end to attract the attention from society to the problem of ageism and to lower it.
