The Effects of Self-Perceived Physical Attractiveness and Self-Esteem on Mate preference of Unmarried Man and Women

This study tried to clarify factors of mate selection of unmarried men and women, the effects of individual self-perceived physical attractiveness and self-esteem on mate selection factors of each spouse, if there are differences in effects of the two variables according to gender, and the existence of casual relationships amon these variables. This study was intended for unmarried women and men who are 25 to 35 years old and live in Gwangju. And for the materials, 375 copies were used in the final analysis except the ones with incomplete answers. The results are as follow. First, factors of mate selection were classified into 4 factors of good parenting, good gene, good partner, and good investment ability. Second, self-perceived physical attractiveness generally had the significant effect on mate selection and has found to be in order of good gene factor, good parenting factor, good partner factor, and good investment ability factor. Third, self-esteem generally had the significant positive effect on mate selection and has found to have the significant effect on good gene factor, good parenting factor, and good partner factor except good investment ability factor. Fourth, self-perceived physical attractiveness has found to have the statistically significant positive effect on self-esteem. Fifth, the indirect effect of self-perceived physical attractiveness on mate selection by connecting it to self-esteem has found to be not significant.
