A Case Study on Korean Immigrant & Trans-migrant Mothers Educational Involvement with In- and Out-of-School Activities in the U.S.

본 연구는 미국 동남부에 거주하는 한국인 어머니들의 교육적 열망과 학교 안팎 교육 참여에 관한 질적 사례연구이다. 4명의 연구 참여자 각각에 대한 3회의 심층 인터뷰를 바탕으로 5개월에 걸쳐 자료가 수집되었다. 본 연구 초반부에 모든 참여자는 이민자로 분류되었으나, 연구가 진행되면서 참가자들과 깊이 교류하는 동안 참여자들을 ‘이민자와 초국가적 이주민’ 이라는 두 집단으로 구별할 필요성이 대두되었다. 이러한 깨달음은 연구 전체의 데이터 분석에 영향을 주었기 때문에 분석의 각 단계에서 일어난 변화의 과정에 대한 상세한 설명을 본 논문에서 제시함으로써 질적 연구에 관심이 있는 독자들과 함께 공유하고자 한다. 연구의 결과는 참여자들의 교육에 대한 내면화된 신념 및 열망뿐만 아니라, 이민 혹은 초국가적 다 이주 경험과 같은 각 참여자들이 다르게 경험한 사회문화적 맥락과 관련된 요인들의 상호적 영향으로 미국 거주 한국인 어머니들이라는 공통된 민족집단 내에서도 서로 다른 수준 및 양상의 교육 참여가 나타나고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 저자는 연구 참여자들이 들려주는 이야기를 그들의 목소리 그 자체 날것의 상태로 전달하여 리얼리티를 살리고자 했고, 이를 통해 참가자들의 목소리를 대변하는 것뿐만 아니라 미국 내 소수민족 어머니들의 교육적 개입에 내재된 현실에 대한 이해를 높이고자 했다. 마지막으로 이 연구를 통해 소수 민족 어린이, 그 가족 및 커뮤니티 또한 이 사회의 구성원으로서 그들의 요구와 고민들 또한 교육현장에서 공유되고 이해되어야 함을 강조하고자 한다.

This qualitative case study investigates Korean mothers living in the southeastern U.S. regarding their aspirations and educational involvement with in- and out-of-school activities. Data was collected over a five-month period based on three in-depth interviews with each of the four participants. At the beginning of this study, all participants were categorized as immigrants. However, it became necessary to distinguish the participants as immigrants and trans-migrants while deeply interacting with the participants. This realization influenced overall data analysis so that I intended to show the detailed description of each steps of analysis that would be noteworthy for readers interested in qualitative research. The findings indicates that, in addition to internalized beliefs and aspirations of participants in education, the mutual influence of factors related to their diverse patterns of immigration or transnational migrant experiences led to different degree of involvement in education, even within the same ethnic group of Korean mothers residing in the U.S. This qualitative research aims not only just to represent the minority mothers through representation of their voices itself on the paper, but also to increase understanding of the reality embedded in educational involvement of the ethnic minority mothers. Finally, this study highlights that minority children, their families and communities are members of this society and their needs and concerns should also be shared and understood in the educational field.
