Social History of Banned Books Before and After ‘Lifting on a Ban’

최근 1988년 해금 조처가 가져온 효과를 밝히는 중요한 연구들이 발표되었지만, 북한 지식의 해금이라는 차원에만 집중한 측면이 있다. 납월북 작가에 대한 해금은 문학사 뿐 만 아니라 학술과 지식장 전체에 큰 변화를 가져온 사건이었다. 따라서 해금 조처는 전반적인 금서 체계 안에서 이해될 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 이를 위해 먼저 1980년대 금서의 전체상을 재구성하였다. 1988년의 해금 조처 이전부터 압수와 부분적 해금이 반복 되었다. 이 과정에서 생산된 정부 문건, 신문 보도 등을 통해 680여종의 금서 목록을 추출했다. 이 목록이 1980년대 금서의 전체라고 말할 수는 없지만, 금서 체계의 중심을 형성하는 목록이라는 점은 분명해 보인다. 이 글에서는 이들 금서 목록 중에서도 박정희 유신 정권 시기의 정치의 이면사를 다룬 책들에 주목했다. 돈과 여자와 결부된 권력의 이면을 다룬 이 책들은 일종의 정치 포르노로서 문화사가 Robert Darnton이 분석한 프랑스 혁명과 정치 포르노의 관계와 유사해 보인다. 정권은 이 책을 본 대중들이 유신 정권의 도덕적 타락이 지금도 지속되고 있다고 인식하는 것을 두려워한 듯하다. 80년대 금서는 새로운 다양한 해석을 기다리고 있다.

Important researches were recently presented that clarify an effect brought by a measure of removing a ban in 1988, but have the aspect of having concentrated only on the dimension called lifting the embargo on North Korea’s knowledge. Removing a ban on the authors, who were kidnapped by and defected to North Korea, was an event that caused a big change in the whole of the scholarship and knowledge field as well as literary history. Accordingly, an action of removing the embargo needs to be understood inside the whole banned-book system. For this, this study first reconstructed the whole image of the banned books in the 1980s. From before the measure of lifting the ban in 1988, the confiscation and the partial removal of the embargo were repeated. Through the government documents and the newspaper reports, which were produced in this process, the list of about 680 banned books was extracted. This list cannot be mentioned to be the whole banned books in the 1980s, but seems to be obvious in a point as saying of the list, which forms the center of the banned-book system. This writing was paid attention to the books that addressed the inside history of politics in the period of the Yushin(維新) regime of President Park Chung-hee even out of the list for these banned books. These books, which covered the other side of power that is linked to money and woman, correspond to a kind of political porno, and seem to be similar to a relationship between the French Revolution and the political porno that cultural historian Robert Darnton analyzed. The government seems to be afraid of the recognition in the people of having read this book as saying that the moral depravity of the Yushin(維新) regime is being continued even now. The banned books in the 1980s are awaiting newly diverse interpretations.
