백제에서는 5세기를 전후하여 장식대도 문화가 본격화된다. 오산, 천안, 공주, 서산 등지에서 출토된 상감대도와 용봉문대도가 대표적인 사례이다. 선행 연구에서 이미 각 대도의 제작기법 및 도상에 대한 검토가 진행되었고 백제를 출발점으로 하여 신라, 가야, 왜로 장식대도 문화가 확산되었음이 밝혀진 바 있다. 필자는 지난 수년 간 백제의 장식대도를 복원 제작해봄으로써 그것에 어떤 기술력이 구사되었는지를 검토한 바 있다. 아울러 대도의 외형과 문양, 그리고 기술 가운데 어떤 것이 ‘백제적’인 속성인지 해명해보려는 작업을 지속하고 있다. 이 글은 이와 같은 연구의 일부로, 백제 장식대도의 원형복원을 위해 주변국 장식대도를 기술 및 양식적 측면에서 비교 검토해 본 것이다. 가야의 경우 백제와 마찬가지로 상감대도와 용봉문대도가 유행했다. 특히 대가야 대도의 계보는 백제에서 찾을 수 있지만 철지금은장鐵地金銀裝기법은 가야 대도에서만 보이는 독특한 기술이다. 신라의 장식대도는 백제의 것과 큰 차이가 있으며 상원하방형上圓下方形 고리 안에 삼엽문을 새긴 것이 전형적인 예이다. 일본 고분시대에 집중되는 장식대도 가운데에는 백제의 영향을 받은 것도 일부 있지만 가야를 거쳐 전해진 것들이 많다. 고분시대 후기가 되면 열도列島적인 양상으로 변화한다. 검토 결과 백제의 장식대도 문화는 동아시아에서 가장 선진적 요소를 갖추고 있었으며, 특히 정밀한 공예기술과 정교한 도상을 지속적으로 유지한 것은 주변국 대도와 구별되는 특징임을 밝힐 수 있었다. 이러한 검토 결과를 활용하여 향후 백제 장식대도의 원형복원 작업을 지속하고자 한다.
Around the 5th century in Baekje, the culture of swords with decorated ring pommels was developed in earnest. Inlaid swords and swords with dragons and phoenix motif ring pommels, which were excavated from Osan, Cheon-an, Gongju and Seosan represent the culture. Preliminary studies have already examined manufacturing techniques and images of each sword and verified that swords with decorated ring pommels were extended from Baekje to Silla, Gaya and Wae. The author has investigated what technical skills were used for swords with decorated ring pommels of Baekje, by directly manufacturing them for years. Moreover, the author has continued to elucidate appearance and patterns of swords and what technology among others has ‘Baekje’s own’ attributes. This paper, a part of the study tried to comparatively examine skills for and styles of swords with decorated ring pommels between Baekje and neighboring countries, in order to restore the archetype of them. As in Baekje, inlaid swords and swords with dragons and phoenix motif ring pommels were popular in Gaya. In particular, although the genealogy of swords in Dae Gaya can be found in Baekje, gilt-iron(鐵地銀裝) technique is unique, in that it can be seen only in Gaya swords. Significantly different from swords with decorated ring pommels in Baekje, those in Silla typically have three-leaves patterns in the rings in the form of circle top and square bottom(上圓下方形). Some of swords with decorated ring pommels, which were intensively manufactured in the Japanese period of ancient burial mounds, were affected by Baekje, but most of them were transmitted via Gaya. By the late period of ancient burial mounds, they were changed to show styles of a chain of islands(列島). The findings show that the culture of swords with decorated ring pommels in Baekje had most leading factors in East Asia, especially, precise craft skills and sophisticated sword images, which have been maintained are characteristics distinguished from those of swords in neighboring countries. The restoration works of Baekje swords with decorated ring pommels are expected to be continued based on the findings, in the future.
