The Impact of Mentoring During the Practicum: In the Context of Child Welfare Center

멘토링이 초등영어 예비교사교육에 미치는 영향: 지역아동센터를 배경으로

본 연구는 교육실습 과정에서 구성주의 기반 멘토링이 예비영어교사에게 미치는 영향에 관해 살펴보고자 하였다. 예비영어교사들은 지역아동센터에 다니는 초등학생들을 대상으로 2018년 4개월 동안 초등영어를 가르치는 교육실습을 진행하였다. 8명의 예비영어 교사들은 멘토링 기반 수업성찰을 통해 교사로서의 전문성을 신장시키고자 하였다. 질적 연구방법을 바탕으로 대화, 면담, 및 설문자료를 수집하여 분석하였다. 연구결과에 따르 면, 멘토링은 학생들의 수업참여를 증진시키고, 보다 효율적인 수업환경을 조성하는데 도움이 되었다. 또한, 멘토링은 학생들의 영어수준을 고려한 수업전략과 핵심단어에 초점을 둔 독해교수전략을 제공하는 계기가 되었다. 한편, 정서적 측면에서 멘토링은 예비 영어교사들에게 영어교육에 대한 동기를 촉진시켰으며, 공감과 정서적 안정감을 제공하는 역할을 하였다. 본 연구는 예비영어교사들의 교육실습현장에서 구성주의 기반 멘토링의 긍정적 효과를 보여주고 있다.

This study attempted to unveil the impact of mentoring on student teachers’ learning to teach during English teaching practicum in child welfare centers. Mentoring followed more constructivist principles of learning by providing facilitative and constructive feedback to encourage student teachers’ reflexivity and growth of teacher efficacy. Qualitative research method was adopted in order to examine how mentoring contributes to their gaining of expertise. Data included questionnaires of eight student teachers, conversations during individual mentoring, and semi-structured interviews with four student teachers. The data were collected and analyzed for four months from August through December, 2018. The findings of this study showed that mentoring could assist in adopting more student-centerd approach by promoting student participation and providing classroom rules to manage classes. Mentoring also opened the student teachers’ eyes to identifying and meeting students’ English proficiency levels and adopting effective reading techniques. Affectively, student teachers could be motivated and encouraged to teach children through mentoring. This study will be able to inform teacher educators of the impact of constructivist-oriented mentoring on pre-service English teachers’ teaching practices.
