A Study on the Four-holes Stone Knives

반월형석도 가운데 4개의 구멍이 뚫려 있는 것을 본고에서‘4공석도’로 명명하였다. 구멍의 위치에 따라 4개가 횡으로 나란히 뚫려 있는‘좌우 4공석도’와 2개씩 쌍을 이루어 위아래로 천공된‘상하 4공석도’로 구분되는데, 전체적으로 주형이 많고 어형, 즐형, 장방형도 확인된다. 시기적으로는 대부분 전기에 속하지만 특정 시기의 유행을 나타내기보다는, 해당 시기의 유물에만 적용할 수 있는 기술적 한계 때문에 발생한 시간적 편중성으로 보는 편이 좋다. 지역적으로는 호남지역에서만 출토 사례가 없는데, 이는 해당 지역에 전기 유적이 상대적으로 적기 때문이다. 먼저 좌우 4공석도는 2개의 구멍을 뚫어 사용하다가 후에 한쪽으로 약간 치우쳐 2개를 추가로 천공하였다. 이를 통해 날의 한쪽만 집중적으로 마모되는 것을 방지하여 보다 오랫동안 석도의 사용이 가능하였을 것이다. 그러나 4공석도의 사례가 지나치게 희소한 점을 생각하면, 해당 형식의 등장을 단순히 제작 및 사용상의 효율성 때문으로 보기는 어렵다. 필자는 특정 개인이 특별한 의미로 소장한 소위‘애착 물건’이었을 가능성을 상정하고, 오랜 기간 동안 기능을 유지한 상태로 사용·소유하기 위하여 추가 천공이 이루어진 것으로 파악하였다. 다음 상하 4공석도는 좌우 4공석도와 다른 목적으로 제작 및 사용되었음이 분명하다. 그러나 중앙에 있는 2개의 구멍을 먼저 뚫고 위에 2개를 추가로 천공하였다는 점은 확인되지만, 구체적인 제작 목적이나 사용 방식은 추정하기 어렵다. 다만 위쪽에 뚫린 2개의 구멍에 대해 상대적으로 작고 등 부분과 지나치게 가까워 제작 또는 사용 시 파손 가능성이 높기 때문에, 큰 힘을 받지 않는 보조적인 역할을 생각해 볼 수 있다. 좌우 4공석도와는 달리 실물 관찰이 이루어지지 않아, 이를 기초한 사용흔 분석을 실시하여 구체적인 사용 방식을 상정할 필요가 있다.

Naming the stone knives with four holes on it as the four-holes stone knives, this study divides these artifacts into two groups. One is stone knives which have 4 holes on the line from left to right (one line four-holes knives) and the other is two pairs of double holes (line splitting four-holes knives). The typological category of these tools are mostly boat shape, although some of them are fish, comb and rectangular shapes. These belong to the Early Bronze Age, as in this period relatively larger knives are found which make it possible to have four holes on them. Geographically they are distributed widely except in Honam area, seemingly because in this area limited number of sites in EBA are confirmed. First, one line four-holes knives seem to have had only two holes, added by two more holes after several times of use. By doing so, it should be possible to use these tools longer than keeping on using the same holes. However, as the examples of four-holes knives are extremely limited, the emergence of this type seems not just because of the efficiency of use. The author assumes that these tools were “beloved items” to be used repeatedly and for long time, making the additional holes. Second, line splitting four-holes knives are obviously made in the different intention than the one line four-holes knives. It was confirmed that the holes on the bottom line were perforated first, yet it is still difficult to know the purpose of making and use of this kind of tools. Nevertheless, as the holes on the top are smaller than the ones on the bottom and very close to the upper edge of the knives, which makes these tools less durable, they should be used as supplementary tools rather than using it with a strong force. Further research including use-wear analysis is required to identify their function.
