Prehistoric Archaeology in the Hoseo Region: For the Last Two Decades

‘學史’형태의 글에서 흔히 언급되듯, 한국고고학은 지난 2·30년 간 비약적인 성장을 해왔다. 그런 점에 비추면, 최근 20년의 湖西地域 先史考古學도 質과 量의 측면에서 성장했을 것을 충분히 기대할 수 있다. 다만‘지역’고고학의 발달이 반드시 한국고고학 전체와 동일한 궤적을 밟았는지를 확신할 수는 없는바, 이 문제는 여러 측면의 자료 분석을 통해 실질적인 접근을 필요로 한다. 그 실질적인 접근으로 본고는 白書 형태의 서술을 시도한다. 그간 한국고고학 전체는 물론이고, 지역 고고학에 대한 학사 서술은 다양 한 방향으로 이루어져왔고 그 장단에 대한 평가도 엇갈린다. 본고는 그러한 몇 가지 시도를 참조하면서도 새로이 백서 형태의 서술에 주목한다. 지역 고고학의 학사가 한국고고학 전체의 그것과 다르기 때문이며, 그간의 시도들이 소위 지역 고고학을 지탱하는‘物的 土臺’ 의 변화는 무척 소략하게 다룬 점에 불편을 느꼈기 때문이다. 물적 토대의 변화라는 측면에서 호서의 선사고고학은 지난 20년 간 한국고고학 전체나 다른 지역 고고학과 유사하면서도 다소 상이 한 양상을 보인다. 한편으로, 한국 선사시대 서술과 교육의 토대가 되는 정보의 축적에서 호서의 선사고고학은 다른 어떤 지역보다 큰 기여를 했던 것으로 나타난다. 특히, 한국 청동기시대 주요 쟁점에 관련된 논의에서 호서고고학은 지난 20년 간 압도적인 비중을 차지 해왔다.

As mentioned in various literatures concerning on the history of Korean archaeology, the last two or three decades witnessed a sort of drastic growth in it. In this light, the archaeology of the Hoseo region, as a part of Korean archaeology, can be expected to experience substantial growth in quantitative and qualitative terms. However, as the trajectories of ‘local’ archaeologies are unlikely to coincide with that of Korean archaeology, the expectation needs to be examined through the substantial analyses. For the substantial examination, I attempt at adopting a form of white paper. So far, writing history of overall Korean archaeology as well as local ones, has been approached in varied ways and the estimation about them has not been in the same way. I find some usefulness in the form of white paper with reference to the current approaches, because the local history of archaeology seems to be written in the same way with overall Korean one, and because infrastructure of local archaeology has not been thoroughly examined in writing its history. In terms of changes in its infrastructure, the prehistoric archaeology of Hoseo region, during the last two decades, shows slightly different trajectory against overall Korean one. On the other hand, archaeological activities in Hoseo region have resulted in bigger contribution to writing and educating prehistory of Korea than any other region in Korea, such as Jungbu, Youngnam and Honam. Specially, Hoseo s prehistoric archaeology have been prevalent in discussion about hot topics relevant to Korean Bronze Age.
