溫暖濕潤 혹은 寒寒乾燥?

Warm-and-Humid or Cold-and-Dry?: A Climate Archaeological Approach to Korean Prehistoric Sociocultural Development

(기후)환경결정론에 대한 집착이나 인간의 능동적 선택에 대한 과소평가가 비판을 받으면서 기후의 불가항력적(?) 영향력이 저평가되기도 하였다. 그렇다고 기후가 과거 인류문화의 변동에 지대한 영향을 미쳤을 것을 부정하는 연구자가 많지도 않다. 오히려 최근에는 기후 위기와 같은 사회적 분위기에 편승하여 기후변동과 사회, 문화의 관계를 환류적 모형으로 설명하려는 고고학적 시도들이 각광을 받고 있다. 본고는 우선, 그러한 조류가 형성되어온 과정을 ① 環境決定論과 고고학적 설명에서 기후의 의미, ② 체계이론에 입각한 과정고고학의 환경관, ③ 후기과정고고학의 상대주의적 환경관과 복합체계론의 발달, ④ 역사생태학적 접근, 회생 및 보속성의 개념 등 주목할 만한 최근 경향 등의 순서로 살핀다. 아울러, 우리 선사고고학의 기후문제 인식에 대해서도 개략적이나마 비판적으로 검토한다. 이러한 일련의 작업을 토대 위에서, 본고는 우리 선사문화의 변동을 좀 더 온전하게 이해하기 위한 한국적 기후(변동)고고학의 진전을 위한 이론·방법론적 모형의 발달방향을 모색해본다.

Harshly criticized adhering on environmental determinism and disregarding for dynamics of human action, the uncontrollable influence of climate in the sociocultural development has been underestimated. However, the role of climate as an important influential factor in the human past has not been totally denied. Rather, archaeological attempts at explaining on the relationship between climate change, human and society are recently standing on the spotlight, climbing on the bandwagon of the dread of current global warming. This paper reviews the history of archaeological thoughts on human-environment relationship producing current trend in order: first, environmental determinism and the position of climate in archaeological explanation; second, the perspectives of processual archaeology based on the (general) system theory, on the past environment; third, post-processual archaeology’s environmental relativism and complex systems theory; fourth, historical ecological approaches and models based on the concepts of resilience and sustainability. In addition, thoughts prevalent in Korean prehistoric archaeology on the past climatic change are critically examined. Based on the works described above, I explore theoretical and methodological issues relevant to Korean climate (change) archaeology for better understanding on the culture change in Korean prehistory.
