Effects of Horticultural Activity on the Mental Health, Self-esteem, and Sociality in children from low income family

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of horticultural activity programs(HAP) on the mental health, self-esteem and sociality in children from low income family. The four students of children centre in C district of Mokpo are participated in this program. HAP were conducted 1 time per week from October 6th 2008 to May 25st 2009. To examine the effect of HAP, self-esteem, social competence, school adjustment level were evaluated between before and after program. The mental health level was improved significantly from 31.5 point to 23.5 point after HAP than before HAP, and those of all results were significantly in statistics. The self-esteem was improved significantly from 99.7 point to 108.0 point in self-esteem after HTP than before HTP, and there was significant difference between after HAP than before HAP. The school adjustment in this 4 children was improved significantly from 103.0 point to 122.8 point after HAP than before HAP, and there was no significant difference between after HAP than before HAP. The social competence in 4 children was improved significantly from 133.0 point to 153.5 point, but there was no significant difference between after HAP than before HAP. Therefore, HAP was effective in mental health, self-esteem, school adjustment, and social competence of children from low income family.
