  • 35

This study aims to investigate the types and texture of plants used in the relaxation gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show 2010, thereby understanding the characteristics and trends of the plants. Based on people’s awareness and interests in the environment and ecology, the recent trend of garden design follows after natural styles, and the importance of shape and texture is enhanced, as the use of herbaceous plant increases. On this, the study selected items for texture analysis from the six relaxation gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show 2010 and investigated the characteristics of each plant’s texture through frequency analysis. The findings of this study include: with regard to flowers, the trend tends to use small-sized and pastel-colored flowers in a high density and vertical shape. Using materials that go well with foliage, the gardens presented a natural style, rather than emphasizing the characteristics of the flowers. Foliage mainly tend to be small, thickly grown, line-shaped, pinnatifid and patterned. The richness of foliage improved visual texture and the feeling of wild, and the use of materials that are rich in tactile impression enhanced ornamental value. The significant of this study is to present the characteristics of the themes and forms of recent gardens by demonstrating specific species of plants and through an aesthetic standard of texture.
