Influence of Place Attachment on Visitors’ Perceptions and Attitudes about Establishing Cable Cars in Mudeungsan Provincial Park

  • 80

This study examined the influence of place attachment on visitors’ attitudes about establishing cable cars in a natural area. A total of 126 visitors to Mudeungsan Provincial Park (MPP), a natural park in Korea, completed the survey during September, 2010. Results showed that place attachment (PA) influences visitors’ attitudes about cable car establishment. Respondents with lower PA tended to support cable car development more than those with higher PA. PA was not statistically related with beliefs about the potential impacts of cable car (BICC). Place identity, however, was related with BICC while place dependence was not. Age, residential area and duration of residence, and amount of previous visits to MPP were related with PA. PA seems to be a preceding factor to lead people to pro-environmental behaviors. Identifying influential factors on increasing PA and searching for some ways to control and utilize such influential factors for more desirable management of natural parks are needed.
