Effects of Temperature and Wind Velocity on Phytoncide Concentration in Korean Pine(Pinus Koraiensis) Forest

  • 74

The objective of this study was to estimate the amount of Phytoncide in Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis) forest as influenced by temperature and wind speed. Air samples were collected from the pine forest twice per month (every 15 days) from May to November 2011. They were collected 3 times each day at sunrise, culmination(noon), and sunset using Tenax Ta Tube, VOCs were detected and quantified using a Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer(GC/MSD). Correlations among NVOC(α-Pinene, Camphene, β-Pinene, and Benzaldehyde), temperature, and wind velocity in Korean pine forest were determined using polynomial trend curves. The main results derived from this study are summarized as follows; The highest levels of α-Pinene were usually detected at the time of sunrise, while the highest levels of Benzaldehyde and the Camphene were usually detected at the times of culmination and sunset, respectively. Overall, the concentrations of α-Pinene, Camphene, β-Pinene, and Benzaldehyde were higher at the time of sunrise and lower at the time of culmination. Lower concentrations of α-Pinene, Camphene, β-Pinene, and Benzaldehyde were measured when weather conditions changed (e.g., strong wind, heavy precipitation) prior to measurement. In summary, this study provided basic information on detection and quantification of diverse Phytoncides from Korean pine forest and showed the relationship among the Phytoncides and temperature/wind velocity. The results from this study can be used as baseline data for promoting therapeutic effects of forests for the general public and directing future research associated with therapeutic forests.
