Physiological Activity of Extract from Self-Sown Young Citrus Fruits in Jeju Island

  • 20

This study was conducted to evaluate the basic information on the screening of young citrus fruits grown in Jeju Island to increase its consumption for their functional ability. Young fruits of ten species of native citrus were harvested and made extracts for examining their physiological activities. Total phenolic contents in the hot water extracts from Citrus aurantium ‘Jigok’ and C. sunki ‘Jinkyool’ were ranged 151.3 and 178.4mgㆍL-1, respectively, which were significantly higher than other species, Whereas, ethanol extracts obtained from ‘Bungkyool’, ‘Dongjungkyool’ and ‘Inchangkyool’ were relatively higher; 209.3, 204.2 and 178.4 mgㆍL-1, respectively. Total flavonoid contents in the hot water extracts from ‘Jigok’ and ‘Dangyooja’ were noted as 181.1 and 159.7mgㆍL-1. Ethanol extracts from ‘Jigok’ and ‘Dangyooja’ documented 289.8 and 282.6mgㆍL-1. DPPH radical scavenging activity, IC50 values of ‘Inchangkyool’ of hot water and ethanol extracts revealed 122.7 and 314.3mgㆍL-1, respectively. The ratio of nitrite scavenging ability of 1,000mgㆍL-1 extracts of hot water and ethanol were 12.4-43.4% and 78.0-80.1%, respectively. Tyrosinase inhibition activity displayed higher in ethanol extract than the hot water, especially in C. erythrosa ‘Dongjungkyool’, C. tachibana ‘Hongkyool’ and C. leiocarpe ‘Binkyool’. These results confirmed that native young citrus fruits would be useful for product development, and as materials for the encouragement of a related industry.
