Characteristics of Container Gardens according to Places in Consumption Culture Space

  • 24

This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of container gardens according to places by surveyed and analyzed container gardens in Garosugil in Shinsa-dong, Samcheong-dong and Seorae Village that are representative consumption culture places. The results showed that in Shinsa-dong, container gardens were most frequently found in fashion stores, as the region was first established as a fashion and design district. The gardens mainly used terra-cotta containers, greenish and evergreen plants, placing them at the entrance of the store to lead visitors’ steps and serve as a fashionable decoration. In Samcheong-dong, most businesses used container gardens to give a sense of vitality to old and small spaces. The gardens mainly used pinkish flowering plants in rectangular containers, placing them in front bottom position to create a bright atmosphere. In Seorae Village, container gardens were frequently found in cafes and restaurants with outdoor terraces, reflecting the place’s characteristics as a French-inspired village. The gardens mainly used warm-colored flowering plants and climber plants on racks and walls. Place has a contextual meaning that is based on culture and locality. As nowadays consumption culture places are actively creating container gardens, such gardens are also influenced by the contextual meaning, and this in turn plays a significant role in developing a sense of place.
