A Study on the Changes of Trees through the Times in Soswewon Garden

  • 71

Soswewon, the representative garden of Korea located in Damyang, South Cholla Province, was made over the period between the latter half of the 1520s and the mid-1530s. This study attempted to investigate periodical and spatial changes in the species and quantities of trees found in Soswewon 48young in 1548 and in Soswewondo in 1755 and of trees surveyed by Jeong Dong-oh in 1976 and by Yu Jae-eun in 1999. 12 species of trees were found each in Soswewon 48young and in Soswewondo, and it was found that 25 species of 73 trees grew in the 1876 on-spot survey and 24 species of trees grew in the 1999 on-spot survey. The on-spot survey conducted in July, 2012 investigated the garden space by subdividing it into 6 domains such as the front garden, the enclosure garden, the valley garden, the bank garden, the back garden and the inner garden, in which 26 species of 99 trees were grown. Periodical and spatial comparison of species of trees showed that the present species of trees were very different from those of 200~300 years ago. And comparison of data published at present and in the 1900s showed that there was a more or less difference in the kinds and quantities of trees. Accordingly, it is necessary to make a continual monitoring and proper management of the garden trees of Soswewon in order to maintain and preserve its traditional original form.
