Effect of Horticultural Therapy on the Psychological State of the Parents of a Child with a Disability - Focus on Parenting Stress, Self-Esteem, Coping, and Social Support

The purpose of this study to investigate the effect of horticultural therapy program that can have a positive impact on parenting stress of parents with disability children. Horticultural therapy is using plants may change the dynamism and sense of responsibility life for the new requirements for high-quality parenting is to reassure him for their own. To evaluate the effect of horticultural therapy programs, parenting stress, coping, self-esteem and social support scale for pre-and post-tests were conducted twice. Horticultural Therapy Checklist rating for each session, the subjects evaluation, activities evaluation, and therapist evaluation, the assistant therapist evaluation. Study has shown parenting stress levels of the experimental findings, average 14.9(t = 8.24) point reduction, self-esteem were measured 3.5(t = -8.04) point increases, stress coping were measured 9.55(t = -6.48) point increased and social support in the experimental group were average score is 18.2(t = -12.82) point increased statistically significant was recognized. Therefore, it was revealed that parenting stress positive impact on the horticultural therapy program faced by parents with children with disabilities. Also it can be activities from each session, the participants planned deliverable within their ability for successful accomplishment and satisfaction feel and thus led to a reduction of parenting stress, improved self-esteem, increased Stress coping and social support.
