Landscape Perception on Ecologically Reclaimed Urban Parks, Seonyudo Park and Haneul Park

  • 257

People’s attachment is an essential factor to support the sustainability of an urban landscape particularly when there are continuous human interventions. Therefore, for building sustainable urban landscape, it is very critical to understand which aesthetic characteristics people are favoring more and the correlation among the characteristics. Especially, there have been an increasing number of post-industrial sites which were reclaimed from former industrial structures. These landscapes are quite dissimilar in aesthetic character from conventional ones. The purpose of this research is to examine the correlation between two major aesthetic values of landscape, naturalness and beautifulness, and define the eventual influence of the two values on the cultural sustainability of the landscape. For the analysis on people’s attitude on landscape, two cases, Seonyudo Park and Haneul Park, were selected in Seoul. Two hundred people were asked to answer the designed questionnaire with several in-depth interviews. Frequency analysis, correlation analysis, factor analysis etc. were used to analyze the data. The results are, first, there is not very strong correlation between beautifulness and naturalness. Second, compatibility and meaningfulness have very strong correlation. Third, respondents seem to value more on beautiful landscape than natural landscape, and this signifies that we should pay more attention on how it looks as much as how it works.
