Growth Characteristics on Sedum sarmentosum and Vitex rotundifolia as Affected by Inorganic or Organic Substrates in Growing Media for Green Roofs

  • 26

The main objective of this study was to determine whether Sedum sarmentosum and Vitex rotundifolia growth characteristics were affected by inorganic or organic substrate in growing media, to ascertain the influence of this substrate in green roof system in woody and herb species. The experimental substrate were used with four inorganic or organic substrate(perlite; natural soil, artificial compost type Ⅰ, artificial compost type Ⅱ), then comparison evaluation of their effect on the growth of Sedum sarmentosum and Vitex rotundifolia were conducted. Sedum sarmentosum was grown in different three soil substrates(perlite, natural soil, artificial compost type Ⅰ), plant height, number of stems, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, chlorophyll contents, fresh weight, and dry weight were higher in artificial compost I, organic substrate treatment than those in perlite and natural soil. Also, Vitex rotundifolia was grown in three different substrates, perlite, natural soil, and artificial compost type Ⅱ, plant height, root-collar caliper, leaf length, leaf width, chlorophyll contents, fresh weight, and dry weight were higher in artificial compost Ⅱ. This provides evidence of the beneficial effects of inclusion of organic substrate for green roof growing media but highlights the fact that the responses to inclusion of organic substrate may be different for inorganic substrates or plants.
